Honda to Implement Groundbreaking Rare Earth Auto Recycling Process

Honda recently confirmed that it would join forces with Japan Metals & Chemicals Company to create the first-ever widespread rare metals recycling plan. The pair announced the development of its new method for removing rare chemicals found in used Honda hybrid vehicle batteries. Dealers from Europe, North America and Japan will have their hybrid vehicle batteries collected. Although Honda has yet to release its step-by-step plans to develop the auto recycling process, it has confirmed that part of the process will be to take out the rare earth materials found in hybrid batteries. Honda reported that process has been trialed successfully in nearly 2,000 batteries.

In a statement, the automaker said that it had originally applied heat to the used nickel-metal hydride batteries and recycled the scrap metal for stainless steel materials. Honda continued by explaining how Japan Metals & Chemicals was able to extract 80 percent of the rare metals from the batteries, which came out as pure as if they had been recently mined.

Several automakers are increasing their efforts to recycle rare earth metals to conserve the earth’s natural resources. Honda will continue to research and execute extractions to maximize the amount of metals it can recycle from discarded batteries.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also stated that it would host a forum about the risks of lithium-ion batteries found in electric cars.
